Product of the Month ~ The Sassafras Science Adventures Volume 2: Anatomy

October 31, 2013 by Paige Hudson

October's Product of the Month ~ The Sassafras Science Adventures Volume 2: Anatomy

Welcome to the Elemental Science’s Product of the Month for October! This month we are featuring the second book from our living book series, The Sassafras Science Adventures Volume 2: Anatomy!

What is the book about?

The Sassafras twins are zipping into homes around the world to deliver a living books education for anatomy like you have never seen before!

Product of the Month ~ The Sassafras Science Adventures Volume 2: Anatomy

The Sassafras series was born out of desire to make science fun and interesting for elementary students. Our hope was to create a series of living books that would teach the basic facts of science in the context of an adventure-style story, so that students would become excited about learning science!

In this volume, the science adventure continues for Blaine and Tracey Sassafras!  Your students will learn all about the human body as the twins zip around the globe. You will visit locations like an ancient tomb in Ethiopia, a garbage landfill in Texas and a bistro in Italy.  Blaine and Tracey meet a variety of local experts who help them along the way to learn about the different systems of the human body.  Read an excerpt from the novel.

The adventure style novel incorporates facts about the human body seamlessly into an action-packed story-line. The activity guide and logbook save you time by providing you with the tools to construct a full homeschool science curriculum!

Product of the Month ~ The Sassafras Science Adventures Volume 2: Anatomy

Who is this book for?

The homeschooler interested in using living books for teaching science or the homeschooler with multiple children who wants to use only one science program will benefit from using this series. The Sassafras series novels are on a 5th grade reading level, so a middle school student can read it on his or her own, or younger students and the whole family can listen to the book as a read-aloud.

The activity guide has suggestions for older (middle-school) and younger (elementary) students. Plus, the logbook is very open-ended, so that you can tailor the program to the individual students’ needs. This way, you can have students ranging from K5 thru 6th grade using the same science program.

When you use the series as your main science curriculum, you will:

  1. Read a chapter in the adventure-style fictional book each week.
  2. Then, you will choose one or more activities from the activity guide to enhance what the students have learned from the novel.
  3. The students will record what they have learned in their own SCIDAT logbook.

October Product of the Month ~ The Sassafras Science Adventures Volume 2: Anatomy

The activity guide provides you with a buffet of options to explore the facts presented in the book.  You can choose to do a scientific demonstration, to study related vocabulary, to make a craft project or to read more about the topic in an encyclopedia.

The novel, activity and logbook work together to create a full homeschool science curriculum.

Where can I purchase the book?

You can purchase the printed version of this book from our website or from Amazon. The Sassafras Science Adventures Volume 2: Anatomy is also available as a Kindle edition.

My daughter is really enjoying the Zoology book. She is dyslexic and HATES writing, but this she will do happily — all because of the fun storyline involved. I am thrilled she will work independently on her logbook, trying hard to make it accurate. It’s our new favorite curriculum! I can’t wait to try to anatomy book!

My 8 yr old loves the Sassafras Twins! I put post-it notes w/ each week’s assignments at the beginning of each chapter, and she often chooses to do her reading and log pages alone, and then we talk about it. She has read the chapter book several times on her own, but loves going back and rereading to complete her assignments. She followed your link and spent lots of time researching endangered species in our state, and even chose to write about it, something that rarely happens.

My boys loved the sample chapters I read of the first book. If I were to win this 2nd volume, I’d definitely buy the first volume and use both. We’re studying biology this year, so they’d be perfect right now.

We’d love to try the Sassafras science books- my son loves science, and we’re deep in the throes of chemistry right now! While he’d study nothing but that, he does need to cover some other topics, and this looks both fun and scientific (and we’re hoping you come out with the Botany one soon, he really wants to study it!)

    • Paige Hudson says

      November 1, 2013 at 6:07 am

      Tiffany,

A boy after my own heart, chemistry is one of my favorites! Volume 3: Botany is currently in the works. I don’t have a definite release date yet, but next year is looking good. Best of luck on the contest :-)!

  15. Tracey M. says

I would love to win and use this curricula with my daughter. At the beginning of the year, I asked my daughter what she wanted to learn about and she told me the human body. Of course, I searched through my “teacher” resources and can’t find anything on the topic. This would be a great introductory course. She loves reading, writing, note booking, researching, and science. I am sure that the adventure story will immediately capture her attention. I am all about the living book approach! I love the fact that the children travel around the globe – allowing any parent to easily integrate a little geography or mapping into the lesson. This curricula looks like a “perfect” fit for us and it would be a blessing to win it. I appreciate that the activities are leveled so that we can pick and choose what works for our children. Some days I feel like she needs more of a challenge. Thank you for the chance to win your new program. I look forward to hearing about future curricula as well.
